As a regional hub, Tamarindo offers a wide-range of extensive services to visitors including sport fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, and horseback riding. Separated from Tamarindo by the Río Matapalo is Playa Grande, an uninspiring crop of pebble-rock seashore except for numerous tide pools that are exposed at low tides.

Tamarindo’s extensive development has imbued elements of affluent foreign culture from modernist cafés to chic restaurants into the fundamentally Tico culture, making for an appealing combination of both worlds.

Day 12 – Friday: Full Day City and Canal Tour

Visit Panama Viejo, first Spanish settlement, founded in 1519 and destroyed in 1671 during the attack of the infamous pirate Henry Morgan. It was in fact the Spanish governor who set fire to the city to avoid it falling in the hands of the privateers.

The city was rebuilt some years later on the foothills of Cerro Ancon. The '' Casco Viejo '' has several attractions that you shouldn’t miss and can easily cover in a short walk. A monument to the French entrepreneurs who began the Panama Canal stands at the bay side end.

After a stop for lunch (not included) a short transfer through the modern part of the city will take us to Miraflores locks. Ships must pass those imposing water elevators to navigate in and out the Panama Canal and it is a fascinating and unforgettable show to watch the steel giants going through the locks, where the biggest of them, called "Panamax", only have 2 feet between their hull and the side of the chambers!

After passing under the beautiful "Bridge of the Americas" your ship will go through the Miraflores locks and soon after, arrive to Pedro Miguel locks. Shortly after, you will enter what is known as the Culebra Cut or Gaillard Cut. This is a spectacular part of your journey as the Culebra Cut goes through the hills of Panama's central mountain ridge! This section of the canal is full of history, it was the most difficult part of the construction and thousands of lives were lost there.

You shall see "contractor's hill", and "gold hill". It is quite common to see large crocodiles lying in the sun on sandbanks!

After the Culebra Cut your ship will meet with the mighty Gatun lake, which was until 1936 the biggest manmade lake of the world. Your destination will be the town of Gamboa, Panama canal's maintenance and dredging port, where you will disembark. A shuttle will provide a 30 min transfer back to Panama City.
